Alloa Hub - Our Story
In 2017 the building we see today was closed as a public toilet and lay derelict for over six years. Together the Alloa First Business Improvement District (BID), Clackmannanshire Third Sector Interface (CTSI) and Clackmannanshire Council worked together to develop a plan for the building.
This started with a wide consultation with the community using the Place-Standard Tool. This led to a set of improvement ideas that the community wanted to see for the building and the whole town centre area.
This was called the Living Alloa project as it also encompassed a new large scale housing development for older people right opposite.
With funding from the Scottish Government, work began on repurposing the building. As well as new routes into the town centre, seating areas and traffic changes.
However the centrepiece of the regeneration work became the new Alloa Hub.
With the building in place, the leadership group came up with an innovative idea to create the first Community Benefit Society for the county, Alloa Hub Limited.
This allows the community shares to be sold to help raise capital. Contributor shares at £20 each can be sold throughout the world however community shares at £1 can only be sold to people who live locally.
Shareholders with both a contributor share and a community share can make decisions on the Hub. They can also receive interest on their investments! The Alloa Hub Limited is also a registered charity.
Awards
In 2022, the Living Alloa project and the Alloa Hub won the highly-coveted SURF award.
It is also a Scottish Civic Trust and Visit Scotland Thistle Award winner.
