Community Ownership Through Shares
The Alloa Hub is unique in Clackmannanshire as it is the only Community Benefit Society (or Ben-com for short) that operates.
This means that local people and investors further afield have purchased community shares to help get it established. These shares are an investment, NOT a donation, and over time investors may receive interest on their investment.
Investing in the Future of Alloa Hub
Like any investment, at the start of its journey, a business plan was produced that outlined how the Hub was going to raise funds – from delivering services, including its family learning sessions and its public toilet, renting out its workshop space, or selling a beautiful range of locally produced products, including everything from guidebooks and candles to jewellery and food.
This income can be a mix of community shares, donations, grants and income from selling items – it is a social enterprise and all money raised is invested back into the enterprise and to the wider community benefits. Alloa Hub is managed by a board of trustees who are all members with a range of skills appropriate to operating a social enterprise.
Understanding Community Benefit Societies
Community Benefit Societies are monitored, like Credit Unions, by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), which provides security on the money invested.
For more details on community shares, please go to Your Community Shares Journey. Between 2014 and 2023, there were 58 community share launches in Scotland, raising over £19million. They range from shops to hotels and energy schemes, and even a distillery!
Alloa Hub Shares Options
There are two kinds of shares:
Contributor Shares: Cost £20 and anyone across the world can purchase them.
Community Shares: Cost £1 and are exclusive to residents living in Clackmannanshire.
If local people have at least one of each type of share, they can have a say at the annual AGM, share their ideas, and benefit from a 5% discount on shop items.
